This week is the first of EIGHT CONSECUTIVE weeks of senior tournaments in SW Florida. It is the National Senior Men’s Tennis Association’s (NSMTA) Cat III doubles only event, held at the Sanchez/Casal (Naples Bath and Tennis) facility in Naples.
Doubles Round Robin
This well run (thank you Larry T) event has over 100 players participating in a round robin format that guarantees most every team at least three matches to play. The round robin portion was played on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday with some of these highlights …
- Amenities: There were lunch
specials each day and “free” lunch on Wednesday, with beer and nice
appetizers each afternoon after the match play.
- 55 Doubles: Paul Williamson and
Kevin Collins won the small draw finals.
- 65 Doubles: Local friends Willy
Hoffmann and Andy Bloom are in the semis today vs. Howie Ames and Tom McGinnis
- 70 Doubles: Locals George Morton
and Jon Weiss upset Bob Wilkie and George Dalphon only to lose the next
round to Dave Wendt and Allen Geraci – who upset Larry Turville and Mas
Kimball! Wendt/Geraci and in today’s
semis vs. locals John Owler and Patrick Bologna.
- 75 Doubles: Noble Hendrix and I
played well all week, winning all three matches in straight sets, to make
it today’s semis. All four of the
seeds made it through; so it is … Drilling/Kileff vs. Kinyon/Keenan and
Irvine/Jonsson vs. Noble and me (all at 11 am).
- 80 Doubles: Good friends Dick Valentine and Michael Fenster paired up to make it to the finals today, also at 11 am.
