NSMTA Semifinals

Noble and me: Brothers in Biceps

Friday’s semifinal matches at the first 2019 tournament were formatted for a full three sets – if needed, and in several cases, they were needed!

60s Semis

Richard Bechtel (OH) and local John Gillette will face off vs. Marc Krupp and Jim Payne today.

65s

Good friends Bob Wilkie and George Dalphon served for their first set, but lost it in a tiebreaker … won the second set … but lost in a close third set 6-4.

While three more good friends played on the next court … Willy Hoffmann and Andy Bloom lost in three sets (three hours!) to Howie Ames and Mark Bales (Sarasota).

70s

#1 seeds Larry Turville and Mas Kimball had a surprisingly close win (2 and 4) over Mike Lammens (CO) and Mark Van Kirk (NC).  While other SW Florida locals Larry Back and Steve Shreiner bested Larry Albritton and Frank Bova 3 and 2.

75s – Our Match

Noble and I took the court just after 3 p.m. to face the tough team of Hank Irvine and Evert Jonsson (who had not lost a single game in their first three matches!!).  Our goal was to “win a game early”.

I served first and was broken; but we were able to come right back to: break Hank’s serve … hold Noble’s serve … and break Evert’s serve.  After trading a couple of more breaks, we served for the first set at 5-3.

But they broke my serve for 4-5 … and then Noble and I played our only really bad game (missing three consecutive returns of serve) for 5-5.  They had the MO and broke Noble’s serve to serve for the first set at 6-5.

But Noble and I righted the ship and broke Evert’s serve to bring the first set to a tiebreaker, which unfortunately (for us) they won.

In the second set, we went up an early break; but they broke back and were up 4-2.  Again we righted the ship and brought it back to 4-4.  But again, they persevered to win the next two games and the match 7-6, 6-4.

75s – Drilling vs. Parker

As the sun was setting, I grabbed a beer and went to watch the end of the Parker/Travis vs. Drilling/Kileff match.  Parker and partner won the first set 6-4; but Fred and friend came back to take the second set in a tiebreaker.

The third set was close in play; but not in score … with Parker/Travis taking it 6-1.  So they will meet Hank and Evert in today’s finals at 10 am.

So, if you are in the area, come out to watch all the finals at that time.  And, I will have the honor of presenting the winner the “George Wachtel 75s Trophy”!

  1. Great to see Hank, again, yesterday. Learned from him that there is now some pickle ball being played on clay, apparently with a different ball that isn’t so noisy. Experiences?

Kevin, go back some on my site for the piece on Pop Tennis. george
