This is the week of the third Florida tournament, the big CAT II at Sanchez/Casal (Naples Bath & Tennis), where I entered BOTH singles (not seeded) and doubles (seeded #4 with Matt Davie).
Singles in the morning vs. friend Bill Poist, who is an excellent doubles player with great hands; but not as mobile as he used to be. I stayed totally focused for almost the whole match, coming out with a 6-0, 6-2 win.
In the afternoon, we played the Minnesota team of Bob Busch and Tom Fridinger in doubles. Matt and I were focused and solid throughout and came away with a 6-1, 6-1 victory.
The morning started with heavy rains, which messed up the schedule for the day, with only singles matches being played and doubles postponed till the next day.
My singles match was vs. #9 seeded Billy Koziol from Texas. Billy admitted that he had cut down his tennis frequency to “JUST” 11 times a week (down from 14x because some of his friends are injured)!!
My goal was to out steady him and move him side to side, which worked for an upset victory of 6-4, 6-1.
Into the third round of singles in the morning vs. #5 seeded Alan Carter, from Boca Raton and former WORLD Champion in the 60s (?) age group. Alan is very, very quick around the court, had a solid serve, excellent backhand slice down the line, and good forehand down the line.
I played “OK”, but he was just better than me; and he won 6-3, 6-2 (in about an hour and a half of good singles).
In the late afternoon, Matt and I played Larry Ross (KS) and David Solosko (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania); but both were residents/members at Naples Bath and requested our match be played on the “show court” under the lights.
The “show” was a short one, with Matt and me prevailing 6-2, 6-1.
