The final Naples-area tournament is the CAT II at Sterling Oaks, with 333 entries from all over the country filling the field. With such a large group of quality players, I got neither a singles or doubles seed.
Round of 64 Singles
On Sunday (before the Patriots game) I had my first round singles match vs. a very nice guy, Jerry Ratledge, who happens to be the co-chair of the St. Pete CAT II tournament coming up in about one month.
Jerry is recovering from rotator cuff surgery, so his game is not as good as it used to be; but it was a very challenging blooping-slice affair. I broke his serve first game; but he broke me back in the next game.
It was obvious to me that he couldn’t hurt me with any shots; and the only points he was winning were the ones I missed. So I stopped making unforced errors and won the next 11 games (6-1, 6-0).
Jimmy Parker/Jody Rush Are Beaten!
Congratulations to Hank Irvine and Evert Jonsson, who won the Naples Bath 70s doubles final on Sunday over the #1 seeded team of Parker and Rush, 3-6; 6-2; 10-4
And in two other great Sunday finals:
Men’s 70 Singles
F (1) Fred Drilling d. (2) Donald Long 5-7; 6-2; 7-6
Men’s 75 Singles
F (2) William Simonton d. (5) Bobby Hampton 6-2; 6-7; 6-2
For me, it is a rematch of my strange loss (1-6, 6-0, 6-0) to Maine’s Mike Delucca late this afternoon. But for all the matches, click HERE.
