Tournament Update

maria sThere are several pro and amateur tournaments going on around the world, with some familiar and some new names in the headlines.

WTA Finals

It is good to see Maria Sharapova back near the top of her game and the tournament. Although she lost in the semi’s, I really marvel at her desire to win.

She is one of the most successful (read $$$$) female athletes on the planet, with millions in the bank; but she still goes out there and tries to win every point and every match.

Fed vs. Nadal

I am recording this match from the Swiss Open; so don’t know (and don’t want to know) the result; but good to see two of my favorite players in the finals. Also great to see Americans Jack Sock and Steve Johnson having excellent tournament results.

Fred is Back!

Fred Drilling
Fred Drilling

After almost a full year of poor health (intestinal parasite), Fred Drilling is back on top. He just teamed with Don Long to take home the Gold Ball at Pinehurst for the 70s National Clay doubles, 7-6; 4-6; 7-5 over the #1 seeds from California.

And today, after beating #1 singles seed Hugh Thompson, he is playing Jody Rush for the singles Gold.

National Men’s 60 & 65 Clay Courts

This week, the “younger guys” are traveling to New Orleans for their Clay Court Championships. Naples and New Hampshire friend Bob Wilkie is teamed with Naples’ George Dalphon as #5 65 doubles seeds. And Larry Turville is the #2 singles seed.

In the 60s, I am looking for Naples’ friends (and former Silver Ball winners) Howie Ames and Steve Shreiner to make some noise on the courts – being UNSEEDED. And then Howie can go have both knees replaced later this month!
