After our 1-1 start on Friday, we needed a victory in our early morning match (7:45 am start!!) vs. Tampa area team; and to help, our team Captain Rick Barletta used a little “Strategery” to help us get there.

Morning Matches

Rick had Steve Shreiner play “down” at #3 with my first day partner Steve Morris; George Dalphon at #1 with Jim Katerfield and teamed me up with Jeff Boston at #2 (can you say sacrificial lambs?). We really could have used a three-match sweep to keep us in contention.

Our #1 and #3 teams won in straight sets; so everyone came over to watch Jeff and me. We had won the first set 6-3; but found ourselves down a break, with them serving at 5-3. But we were able to break and bring it to a set tie breaker, which we won.

So our team DID sweep 3-0 and found ourselves in second place; with our afternoon match vs. #1 Sarasota looming ahead.2015 usta scores

Afternoon Matches

We stayed with virtually the same lineup for the afternoon, with Rick Parker teaming up with me at #2 (Captain Rick sat himself for the day). Except Sarasota also used “strategery” and played their #1 team at #2 vs. Rick and me!

Talk about being over matched… their team was Steve ___, who played varsity tennis for Michigan State and his partner was Dan McClure, who is one of the top players in the 60’s (having recently beaten silver-ball-winners Howie Ames and Steve Shreiner in the finals of Cat II Longboat and Baton Rouge!!).

They ran through us 6-3, 6-1; but we were able to win at #1… so it came down to Shreiner/Morris at #3. They lost the first set; but brought the second to a tie breaker. But they couldn’t convert.

So we are eliminated and will play a “dead rubber” (for us) vs. St. Petersburg area.

Atlanta Invitational

Also going on right now is the “Super Cat II” Atlanta Invitational. If you would like to see how #1 seeded Hugh Thompson did vs. big Dave Nash and recovering Fred Drilling played, click HERE
