Longboat Key – Friday

Me and Evert
Me and Evert
Today was the singles quarterfinals (with only one of the eight players in the 70s being an UNSEEDED player!) and the continuation of our doubles match vs. #2 seeds Joe Bachmann and Ralph Howe.

Singles

My singles match was vs. #2 seeded Evert Jonsson (who has beaten me four times in a row) and we got underway at 1030 am. Evert runs extremely well and has a much stronger forehand than backhand; so my strategy was to drive the ball deep with my inside-out forehand to his backhand… come to the net… and put away a volley.

It was the right plan… Just a little difficult to execute. To start the match, I broke his serve and held mine; but then he ran down too many balls and I missed too many key shots… so he ran 10 games in a row.

Down 6-2, 4-0, I decided I was playing for pride (even though there was still the potential for two doubles matches to follow). I focused and was able to break his serve … hold my serve … break his serve, to be back on serve at 3-4. I served a good game; but he broke me and then held serve for a 6-2, 6-3 victory.

Doubles

On Thursday, Chuck and I split sets with Bachmann and Howe; so we had to play the final third set. Joe Bachmann is a real trooper: moving into the 75s in January, he still played solid today after a grueling Thursday of both singles and doubles.

After more breaks than service holds, Joe was serving at 5-4, ad-in for the match. We saved that match point and then THREE more… and finally broke his serve to go 5-5.

We held my serve and Howe held his to bring us to a match deciding tie breaker. We took a 4-2 lead; but they ran four points to be serving for the fifth match point at 6-4. We saved one more; but lost the next and the match: 2-6, 6-4, 7-6.

The good news? Chuck and I can do some real damage in upcoming tournaments + DeDe and I could drive home and not play another full doubles match at 3.30!!
