National 70s Grass
Played at the Philadelphia Cricket Club last week, this one saw the always dominant Jimmy Parker actually lose a set but survive to win the finals. #3 seeded Don Long lived up to his seed, winning the playoff for third place.
Perhaps one of the best matches of the tournament involved good Naples friend Joe McAleer vs. the tough competitor Evert Jonsson in a THREE HOUR grass court match…
(5) Evert Jonsson d. (9) Joseph McAleer 1-6; 6-4; 7-5
In the doubles, Parker/Robinson (#2) cruised to victory; while Jonsson and Long teamed up to win the third place playoff.

National 75/80s Clay
Also played last week, this one was hosted by the Virginia Beach Tennis & Country Club and saw a resurgent Rudy Hernando make it to the finals of the 75s:
(1) Lester Sack d. (5) Rudy Hernando 6-1; 2-6; 6-3
And in the doubles, it was:
Brunkow/Helton d. (3) Mathias/Poist 7-6(2); 6-2
While The King (Van Nostrand) was NOT dethroned in the 80s singles, our own Naples Pelican Bay friend Gordon Hammes took him to three sets in the semi’s:
SF (1) King Van Nostrand d. (4) Gordon Hammes 6-2; 6-7(6); 6-2

This one will take place at the end of this month in Pinehurst, NC, and I just booked my flight to go for the second time! I will be playing singles and am contemplating staying long enough to play doubles. So if you know anyone who is going and in need of a steady partner, please let me know.
