At this week’s third Florida Super Senior Grand Prix tournament being played at the Sanchez-Casal Academy (nee Naples Bath & Tennis Club), there was a weird ending to a doubles match.

Local guys Keith Butterfield and Michael Fenster were playing a 70 doubles match vs. Bob Royden (CA) and Bill Herster (KS). They had split sets and were playing a ten point match tie breaker (still only playing a full third set in the finals at this tournament too).

Michael Fenster is serving 9-8, match point to lefty Bob Royden in the ad court. His first serve was called out; so he puts in a soft second serve that Royden attacks with a solid forehand cross court.

Michael gets his racquet on the ball and pops it up in the air. Bob closes in and hits a “winning” back hand volley down the middle. And then turns immediately to walk to the back fence to pick up the balls for the next point. As he is doing that, a ball comes floating back over the net into his court and bounces past him, as the small crowd cheers … Keith Butterfield had raced back and retrieved the “winning volley” and put match point back in play for the winner!

My Matches

As a number five seed, I had a first round bye on Monday, and then a second round walk over on Tuesday.

My singles match today was vs. number nine seeded Bobby Hampton, retired schoolteacher from Chicago, with a big serve and big forehand. It was cold with a big north western wind, and “the wind was my friend.”

Bobby had trouble with the ball moving around in the wind, but I was able to use it to my advantage, even luckily at times. I won the first set six games to two; but Bobby came back and we were in a tight second set, with his serving 3–4 and ad in.

With the wind to his back and in my face, he hit a big first serve out wide to my backhand, which I just stabbed at. It floated over the net and it landed within 6 inches of the net and stayed there!

I ended up winning the game, but he broke me when I was serving for the match. He served at 4–5 and I was able to break him back for the match, 6-2, 6-4 (two hours).

After an hour + break, Tom McCune and I went back on the doubles court vs. Bobby Hampton and Glen Gibson (CO). The wind still remained our friend, as we won 6-1, 6-3.
