Some incredible action, high quality play, and surprising results on this Friday at the Colonial Country Club.
In the 65 singles final, Bob Wilkie continued his amazing run with a surprising victory over #1 seeded Don Long, 6-1, 6-3. During the WHOLE TOURNAMENT, Bob lost a total of 17 games … While beating four seeded players!
In the 70 singles semis, #1 Fred Drilling was tested by Barry Shollenberger, but came out victorious. And he plays the #2 seed from Hungary, who outlasted a game, but tiring, Chuck Kinyon. The Dartmouth coach was up a break in the first, but fell 6-4; and then had little left in the tank in the second set (or, was he just saving himself for the doubles match with Tom and me that followed?).
After Chuck and Don had some time to change and recover, we took to the doubles court for our match. Tom and I played much better then in our win yesterday; but went down to defeat in a close 6-4, 6-4 loss (we were up a break in each of the two sets).
Time to rest up for next week’s tournament at the World Tennis Center.
Paul Veltman: I just spoke with him… he was driving home from his tennis match yesterday and feeling chest pains. Got home and called 911. He is now in North Naples Hospital and will have a triple by-pass operation on Monday. We all wish him a speedy recovery.
Please NOTE: signup deadline for the third tournament at Sanchez-Casal (nee Naples Bath) is Monday at 5 p.m.
