Sarasota Singles Quarters

This morning, I left rainy Naples for my nearly two hour “commute” north to Payne Park, Sarasota for the singles quarter finals.

My opponent was Glen Gibson, a very nice guy who just retired as a Colorado County Commissioner (age 70), bought an RV; so he and his wife are traveling around the country (and playing tennis). During warm-up, I could see that he had nice strokes on both sides; and during the match, I learned he had a good drop shot and decent serve.

The difference I figured was going to be in speed and conditioning (two of my strengths); so I “invested in the ground game” early on, running him side to side. It paid off quickly; and I was able to stay focused (except for the next to last game of the match), for a solid 6-1, 6-1 victory.

My next opponent was going to be the winner between #2 seeded Guido Weber (who I was told was a former #1 in Canada) and Bob Hoffman, who has played many, many tournaments on Long Island, NY. Guido won the first set; but as I watched, Bob came back to win the second set.

I showered and drove back home; and see that Hoffman went on to complete the upset, winning the third set. So, I face him Friday morning at 10.
