USTA Nationals

Greetings from Surprise, Arizona … the site of the USTA Super Seniors (60 and over) 4.5 doubles League National 2010 (yes, from LAST year’s league play).

Our team faces a real challenge … not only against what will be tough competition being played on HARD courts; but being short-staffed due to injury. Ali Moezzi is not recovered from his shoulder surgery and my doubles partner, Tom McCune broke his wrist during this year’s sectional play in Daytona.

So we come here with just six players (no further injuries allowed), teamed up this way: Dick Valentine/Matt Davie, me/Spike Gonzales, and Bob Dilworth/George Morton (team captain).

There will be twelve teams from around the country, broken up into three flights of four teams in each. So we will play one match today and two matches on Saturday (with the temperatures in the 90’s and wind gusting up to 40 mph!). the winners of each flight and the best #2 team play the semis and finals on Sunday.

We practiced on the hard courts yesterday and I found it challenging to get used to the speed of the ball and the height of the bounce. So, we will see how we all do later today.

More to come.

  1. Good luck with all your matches. I think the New England team is pretty strong. I plan to field a team next year. Say hi to the guys for me.

  2. Good luck; I will be following your progress on Tennislink. You can do it. You worked very hard to get there and it is greatly appreciated.
