Keep Moving or Lose

The University Park Doubles doubles started on Wednesday, with Tom and me playing a solid team of Dave Huff and Laszlo Nagy. We were looking to keep our good team play/movement going from last week’s last two matches.

In the first set, we were even at 3-3, when we agreed we needed to increase our movement: poaching, faking, crossing during points. That strategy worked as we won six of the next seven games.

That gave us the first set at 6-3 and a 3-1 lead in the second set. We were serving for the match at 5-3, when they played a strong return game and broke us to even the match.

It stayed even into a second set tiebreaker, which they won.

In the third set, we started out strong… broke them, held serve, and had several break points that would have given us a two-break lead; but we didn’t convert.

We did hold serve and still held a 1-3 lead in the deciding set. But we got tentative, stopped moving, and lost five of the last six games (and the match)…. 3-6; 7-6(3); 6-4

If you know the state motto of New Hampshire (Live Free or Die); our obvious motto is … Keep moving or Lose.

We will play the back draw to try to regain our form; but have a bye today. So we’ll make the drive back to Naples today and drive back up on Friday.
