Daytona Sectionals Final Day

Sunday morning saw us starting the day tied with St. Pete at two wins and one loss; but with the slight edge in individual matches won. So they played Jacksonville first – and beat them two courts out of three. Which meant that we would play Jacksonville second and have to beat them by at least the same score.

Based on what we saw of Jacksonville’s lineup, we put Spike/Ali on court #1, Dick/Matt on court #2, and Tom/me on court #3.

Spike/Ali made quick work of their match at 6-2, 6-3; but our other two courts were much more competitive.

Dick/Matt were down a break in the first set, with Jacksonville serving at 5-4; but they were able to break-hold-break to take the first set 7-5.

Tom and I had a tough first set that was not indicated by our winning score of 6-1.

Then on both our courts we took 5-2 leads and had simultaneous match points! Dick/Matt won theirs first, clinching the victory. While Tom and I took another game to make the three-match sweep, with a 6-1, 6-3 (nearly two hour) victory.

So, we are the Florida State Sectional Champions and will be going to the Nationals next spring (time and place TBD).

  1. Wow! Glad I didn’t read email until this morning…I would have wanted to know the results ASAP Sunday. Maybe there’s an App for that! Congratulations on a great win.

  3. I was watching the weather radar Sunday and was afraid the whole day was a rain out up there. I hear that George Morton’s 4.0 team also was victorious. Congratulations to all!

Rich – the rain started as we were driving away as champs! And yes, George Morton captained a winning team and played on a winning team. geo

  4. Congratulations to you and your team George!
Sounds like it was a lot of fun — enjoy the celebration, and good luck
    at Nationals!

  5. Great job reporting George. It was surely a pleasure to be with all of you guys this last victorious weekend. We played very well and had a great time off the court.
It’s always fun to win one for Naples and all the great players we have here!!!
