After a first round bye, Tom McCune and I played our first doubles match against the #3 seeded team of Bob Royden of San Diego (who we have both played in singles and doubles before) and a “new guy†Dave Weber of Omaha.
In the first set, we were serving at 5-4, 40-love and somehow managed to lose that game. At 5-5, Bob Royden served a VERY long game – that must have had 11 or 12 add points (probably 8 or 9 for them and three for us); and we ended up converting one to serve at 6-5 and serve out the first set.
In the second set, we broke Weber (the stronger server) to start; but then while I was serving the second game, I pulled a groin muscle lunging for a shot. With me limping some, we lost that game and the set at 6-2.
Tom covered all kinds of court in the third set and we found ourselves with some momentum with Weber serving at 4-4. But unfortunately (an untimely net cord winner by them), they held and then broke us to take the set and the match.
The leg will take some rest; and I hope it will be OK for next week’s singles and doubles at Cambier Park in Naples.
