This past weekend was the annual Chickee Classic Tournament at Cambier Park in Naples; and I played 4.5 doubles with George Morton (for the first time together).
In our division it was a small draw (lots of solid teams chose to play 4.0); so we played the semi’s on Saturday against Larry Albritton (teaching pro formerly from Naples Bath) and Rich Whale (who played on our 4.5, 50+ team last season).
We were about evenly matched; so we squeaked out the first set in a tie-breaker and they came back to win the second set.
Sometimes you play well and win a match. Sometimes you play poorly and lose a match. And sometimes, your opponents play well and they win the match. The last is what happened at the end: Larry and Rich just made some great shots on critical points to take the match in the third set.
In the other half of the draw, Tom McCune and Marc VanDam came up against two twenty-something brothers from Ft. Myers, who play “Open†singles; and got blasted off the court. I guess the young brothers realized the competition wasn’t worth the trip down for them on Sunday; as they called 15 minutes before the finals and dropped out.
In the 4.0 doubles, good friends Dick Valentine and Bob Dilworth teamed up in a much larger draw and had the play FOUR challenging matches Saturday and Sunday; only to lose in the third set in the finals.
