The Time For McEnroe Has Passed

McEnroe’s Time Has Passed The Jim Courier-led senior tennis tour is in Naples, Florida this weekend. And while there has been good tennis and great points, there is a McEnroe cloud hanging over the event. And in my opinion, his time to stay on this tour has passed.

As a fan of the game, I would much rather watch a friendly match between Mats Wilander and Jimmy Arias, with Wilander outplaying and outlasting Arias, 5-7, 6-4, 10-4 in the final tiebreak. Or a highly competitive match between the two younger stars of the tour Jim Courier and Wayne Ferreira; with Courier out hitting him 7-6, 7-5.

In McEnroe’s match against the talkative Arias, they were in a first set tie breaker, when a fan yelled down to a pouting McEnroe, It’s not World War III. It’s a tennis match! Well, McEnroe got into a shouting match with the fan, which ended as usual with McEnroe yelling an expletive.

Since he already had had a warning earlier in the match, the umpire assessed a point penalty. McEnroe’s reaction, I quit! (Which is exactly what they should have let him do).

But a discussion followed and can you guess the result? The point gets restored, McEnroe wins the tiebreaker and then the match. Bad Boy Behavior rewarded.

Life is too short to have to put up with (and pay to watch) people behaving like jerks. As Deirdre my wife said, If McEnroe is playing I would rather not go to watch.
